The Origin of "They Adventure"

A little bit more about the origin of us, written by Zach

Fall, 2020
Sarah and I were in our old apartment, in the middle of one of our classic “we need to travel/do something ASAP or we are going to go crazy” moments, and we didn’t have many options. (This was a frequent thing for us, and very much so, still is.) We had been in the thick of planning for our wedding for quite some time, and the start of COVID totally threw a wrench in the planning. (We ended up having to change all of our “normal” wedding plans, down to a very minimal amount of people unfortunately!) Crunching these numbers for months and working on totally changing things up was getting to us, and we needed something else to work together on.
Taking a Step Back
When it came to travel and adventure, we both individually had pretty great backgrounds involving these things as adults before we met, so creating something like what They Adventure is now totally seemed attainable for us. We both loved camping or being outside. Sarah had experience backpacking Europe, moving from country to country with just a backpack on her back, and also staying on a farm in Wales. Involving leaving the U.S., I had ZERO experience, but I did have a good chunk of experience involving traveling inside of the U.S. (Mainly traveling to places like Texas, Oregon, Maine, and states along the Atlantic Ocean before we met.) But outside of another trip to Texas we took together early in our relationship, we wanted to do more to combine our passion for travel together.
So, as one does during COVID, you nose dive into creating or learning something totally new!
Social Media
We began to think about a way to put all of these stories, experiences, pictures, and videos all into one place. We initially wanted something great to look back upon and add to over time, like a digital journal of sorts. We just weren’t sure how to keep it all together. So we turned to social media! (Of course!) But, as we are all tasked with, what would be the name on all of the accounts? (I think we all share that funny struggle of thinking about something clever to describe yourself as involving your handle, but then also finding the compromise of taking something that hasn't been taken yet. Thinking of clever ways to combine our names, hobbies, etc. Maybe this trauma stems from our shared age where we had to think of something cool to put on AOL/AIM as a username?)
Now that we knew we would be posting things either privately or publicly to a social media account, we had to think of a name. For your enjoyment, here were two real brainstormed ideas. Zacsar (Zach and Sarah combined in some way, so CLEVER), Trips and Travels (Super Vague?), and some others that we thought of didn’t quite make the cut to share publicly, so we settled on going with a broader “They” meaning all our family/anyone, and “Adventure” meaning taking a life defining trip, doing fun day to day things, or just doing rad stuff. It was definitely a broad name, and honestly we weren’t too sure about it. But little did we know at the time, it would end up being perfect because it can apply to anything. (Not only for us, but for anyone else who seems inspired!)
Stay tuned for Post 2, on how we turned this name into what it means now!
